Daughter of a farmer, Gurjeevan Kaur, Marketing Manager, Pernod Ricard India, says her journey from investment banking to marketing has brought out the best in her.

Gurveen Kaur is from Punjab and her father is a farmer while mother was a home maker. She has a younger brother who now lives in Philippines. She grew up in a boarding school and then went to Bangalore for graduation where she graduated with Bachelors in Business Management. Further adding to her educational qualification she also holds a Certificate in International Business from Cambridge University UK. Talking about how she got into the spirits and wine industry, she narrates an interesting story, “Starting as an investment banker, my first job was with Deutsche Bank. I worked with Deutsche Bank for over three years, during this time I worked in India and London. This job gave me great opportunities to learn and groomed me into a true global professional. But deep inside I knew I wanted to be a marketer more than a financial expert. After Deutsche Bank, I joined an experiential marketing agency ‘Showhouse Event Management’ where I managed Pernod Ricard portfolio of brands along with other accounts. So, my stint with the wines & spirits industry started much before I joined Pernod Ricard directly,” she adds.

Great Opportunity

Her job with Deutsche Bank was an opportunity to work at a great place and with great people. “For me it was a very special experience as it was my first job, I learnt a lot there and it shaped me into who I am professionally,” shares Gurjeevan. Her family was very happy, excited and proud that she was going to be working with an organization like Pernod Ricard, which is a dream job for many. “My family has been very supportive of my decisions, have always encouraged me to set greater heights for myself,” says Gurjeevan. She fondly remembers, “My father always says ‘anything you choose to do, do it well, do it with integrity and stay humble’.” Her current responsibilities as Manager marketing include managing two brands in the Premium Whisky portfolio ‘Seagram’s Blenders Pride Reserve Collection’ and ‘Seagram’s Oaken Glow’.

Exciting Work

Talking about her work she says, “It has been a great learning curve. I joined Pernod Ricard as a brand manager for ‘Seagram’s Imperial Blue’. I was given the responsibility of managing the largest brand of the group. Managing one of the most iconic brands in the industry has been extremely enriching and rewarding. I also had the opportunity to create and introduce two new brand variants in the value whisky segment thereby expanding the Imperial Blue Brand Franchise.” She says her goal in life is to be happy and successful both professionally and personally. As for how she balances work and life, she says: “My family, both at home and work, play an important role in helping me balance things. I have a very supportive family and a great team at Pernod Ricard. I also feel everything falls in place and everyone around you understands, if you care.”
