In the wake of Coronavirus scare, the Telengana government has directed to close down all bars and liquor shops in the state from 15 th -31 st March to prevent spreading of the virulent disease. Besides bars and liquor shops, clubs where social gatherings and meetings used to take place by high profile people have also been directed to close down during this period.

The state has more than 1000 bars of which 60 are located in Hyderabad and this step has the potential to adversely affect the liquor business in the state. It is estimated that this 15 day ban would lead to a loss of about Rs.600 crore to the state exchequer.

The possibility of spurious liquor market in the state getting more room in the state to operate is also cannot be ruled out as one of the repercussions of this decision.

Here it deserves a mention that Telengana is the highest liquor consuming state in our country.
