Fierce competition among imported wines

Wine awards are usually organised affairs but what makes the difference is how an award is conducted. So when Spiritz’s Editors decided to judge imported wines for the first time for the magazine’s forthcoming awards Spiritz 2019, it had to be different from myriad ceremonies. Most importantly it has to be truly transparent and credible process.

I was extremely honoured when I was given this opportunity to be a part of hosting/conducting the awards along with Shalini Kumar. Together, we started discussing the award’s wine tasting set up, concept, flow of judgment, etc.

The competition was held in Hilton Garden Inn New Delhi Saket and importers were asked to ship their wines to the competition in order to be considered. There was a nominal entry fee for the same.

In most wine competitions, medals are given to individual wines in various categories on the basis of blind tasting. This is done primarily for the reason to avoid prejudice. But we didn’t stop at planning it as just a blind tasting. We went a bit further ahead and segregated the tasting judgement in multiple stages.
