Refreshing, medium bodied and alcohol red wine,Trollinger is almost solely cultivated in Württemberg region. South Germans mostly consume this drink as a ‘national beverage.’ Steeped in history dating back to the Roman era, Certified Sommelier Kriti Malhotra gives us a lowdown on this rare offering.

Germany is the land of beers and wines. The more north you go in the country, the more beer drinking culture you would find. And the closer you are to the south of the country the more pronounced wine drinking culture you would find.

And yes, Germany has been making some amazing wines for many centuries. As a matter of fact, there was German white and red being served with exotic food like poached salmon at the first class dining room of the Titanic, on the night it went down.

Wine from Trollinger grapes contributes towards enriching Germany’s wine legacy. The Trollinger vines need profound and fertile soils and excellent locations on a slope. Therefore it is the most cultivated grape varietal on the steep slopes of the traditional Württemberg vineyards.

Most of these grapes’s consumption is local and only a small fraction of them is exported, making a wine from this grape a rare wine for foreigners. But in all honesty the wine is not rare for this reason only. The Trollinger wine is also ‘rare’ because it requires an acquired taste to savour.
