Indians did have their date with globally acclaimed Tedeschi wines much later than the other parts of the world when four of its labels arrived in India, in 2019. But within one year, it is making slow but sure inroads in attracting more and more wine lovers. Tedeschi is known for its wines which are highly representative of the region’s terroir, and wines like Amarone, Valpolicella, Valpolicella Ripasso and Soave from the four-hundred-year-old wine production house are toast of wine lovers around
the world.

Tedeschi today owns 46 hectares of land and controls the production of wines from its vineyards till their sales. “We take care of grapes, we make vinification and undertake winemaking. This way, we can give our wines a character and a personality because we check every process of our winemaking,” said Sabrina.

A Rich Legacy

The Tedeschi family has been making wines in the Valpolicella region of Italy since close to four centuries that is since 1630. According to Sabrina, Amarone is one of the expensive wines in Tedeschi winery’s impressive portfolio. “It is because, for this wine, we dry harvest for months. In the process, grapes lose 40 percent of water. We have a low yield production, longer aging barrels but it is a gem of our territory so Amarone’s price betrays its real value,” she added.

Tedeschi family has come a long long way since the time when Sabrina’s grandparents owned a wine bar and were only producing wines for use in the bar and for limited sale to the people in the Amarone area of Italy.

Around 1960s, her father began to develop the family business by moving into a quality production. He introduced the work philosophy which is still being adhered to by the Tedeschi family. “My father, who has a unique knack for identifying and recognizing the potential of grapes from a specific parcel of land, began to vinify and demarcated grapes from the parcel and started to put the name of the vineyard on the label. In this way, one of the first single-vineyard selection Cru Amarone from Tedeschi emerged in 1964, which is our flagship wine today,” elaborated Sabrina while discussing her rich family legacy.
